Call Before You Dig

Wisconsin PROPANE Users Must Dig Safely – Call at least 3 working days before digging. You and your family’s safety are important to us. Wisconsin Law requires that anyone who is excavating must know where all buried utility lines are located. Dig safely by following these key steps:

  • Call your gas supplier to locate your propane gas lines.
  • Call Diggers Hotline 800-242-8511 to locate all other buried utility lines. IT’S THE LAW. Note: Contacting Diggers Hotline will not get private utilities marked. Examples of private utilities include propane gas lines, electric line to a detached garage/shed or lamp, walkway lights, underground sprinkler systems, security systems, sewer or water laterals.
  • Wait the State’s required time (at least 3 working days) before you begin to dig.
  • After underground lines have been located, respect the paint markings or colored flags and dig with care around them. (Do not excavate with power tools or equipment within 18 inches of the markings. If you expose an underground utility line, it is your responsibility to inspect it before backfilling. If damage of any kind is discovered or suspected, you are required to notify the affected utility immedietely.)
